Volunteer Registration for the 2017 Winter Blast Half Marathon, 10k and 5k, presented by Kalamazoo Area Runners (KAR) and the City of Portage, opens October 1st!!! Nearly 200 volunteers are needed for the 5th annual event and we have opportunities for individuals and groups on  Saturday, February 25 and Sunday, February 26, 2017.  Race morning will feature a special volunteer hospitality suite with refreshments and other amenities to enhance the volunteer experience.  Groups should contact Shelbi Cummings at shelbi.cummings@kalamazooarearunners.org for volunteer opportunities and to learn more about the Community Spirit Challenge below.   Individual volunteers should sign up to volunteer here.

Community Spirit Challenge

We are pleased to introduce the Community Spirit Challenge for groups who volunteer to staff one of our seven aid & spirit stations.   Volunteer groups are eligible for cash prizes which they designate to a local (Kalamazoo and adjacent counties) non-profit 501(c) (3) or 501 (c) (1) organization of their choice.  Any business, organization or group is eligible to participate, but must have a minimum of 10 volunteers to staff the aid station and a creative theme, and the recipient of the cash award must be a local non-profit 501(c)(3) or 501 (c) (1)organization.   Proceeds will be awarded as follows based on half marathon participant post-race vote.

  • 1st Place – $1000
  • 2nd Place – $750
  • 3rd Place – $500
  • 4th – 7th Place – $200
